The Chatham Ballhawks won gold in OVA action – Contributed Photo

The 14U Chatham Ballhawk girls recently participated in an 8-team OVA tournament in Essex on the weekend winning gold.

The Chatham girls went in ranked 1st, and shared a pool with London Volleyball Club (LVC) “Ignite”, Sarnia Twin Bridges “Thunder” and the 13U Warriors team from Woodstock rounding out the side. The Ballhawks faced Sarnia first followed by the 13U Warriors sweeping both matches winning 2 straight in both. The next test came from a hard-hitting and very disciplined LVC “Ignite” team. The Ballhawks won the first, but were defeated in the second. However, due to LVC dropping an additional game earlier in pool play, the Ballhawks were awarded first in the pool.

In the quarter final, the Ballhawks crossed pools and played another LVC team, this time going by the moniker of “Fury”. The Ballhawks won 2 straight and awaited a showdown in the semi-final with tournament host South County “Bandits” from Windsor. The Ballhawks again shifted into another gear and quickly took care of the “Bandits” in two straight sets. From there it was on to the gold medal game with an extremely gifted young 13U Forest City team from London. The girls made a complete comeback and staved off a loss several times after being down 24-21 in the first set. When the dust settled, the Ballhawks came away with a 28-26 victory. The second game was still close, but the Chatham girls came out victorious with a 25-21 win. At the end of the day, the Ballhawk girls went 11-1 throughout the tournament.

Placing first in their pool, the Ballhawks did not lose a single set until the final match, where they defeated the Forest City Pines 20-25, 25-10, and 15-6, ending the day with an overall record of 10-1.  Coaches attributed the day’s success to “crisp passing, excellent teamwork, and high energy throughout the day – despite a more than 3 hour wait between pool play and playoffs.”

Pierce Johnson - Windsor Lancers

Pierce Johnson (centre) commits to the Windsor Lancers alongside his CKSS coaches Brian (left) and Tim (right) Leidl – Contributed Photo

Chatham’s Pierce Johnson has committed to join the University of Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball program next season.

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School senior had an official signing Monday at CKSS with his coaches, family, and Windsor head coach Hames Gravelle.

“I am really excited to begin my OUA volleyball career with the Windsor Lancers next fall,” said Johnson, who has helped the CKSS volleyball program to multiple SWOSSAA and OFSAA appearances.

For Johnson, a six-foot-five left side hitter, who is currently a member of the LVC Fire 18U, Windsor was an easy choice.

“It was an easy decision picking Windsor because of how great the guys on the team are and also because it was a great fit academically, but I would have to say the number one reason I chose Windsor was because of the head coach James Gravelle,” explained Johnson.

“After talking with him and practicing with the team a few times, I knew that he was going to be the guy that will get me where I want to go in volleyball, and help me find my full potential as a player and as a student. It is going to be very exciting next year since we are going to have a younger team to see what we are capable of accomplishing.”

An alumni of the Chatham Ballhawks and silver medallist at the 2014 Ontario Winter Games, Johnson is a multi-sport athlete who has also excelled at sports such as basketball, badminton, and track and field at CKSS, along with his dominance on the volleyball court.

Of course, Johnson understands it took the support of his family, and coaches, including Tim Leidl and Brian Leidl, his CKSS coaches who were on hand at the signing, for him to reach his goal of competing at the University level.

“I wouldn’t of been able to have the success I have in volleyball without the help on the court from my coaches Tim and Brian Leidl, and obviously the help and support off the court from my parents.”

The Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team currently sit with a 10-16-1 record overall this season.

CKSS girls volleyball

The CKSS girls volleyball team celebrates after winning a point during the 2016 LKSSAA volleyball final – Contributed Photo

The game of volleyball was invented in 1895, just four years after basketball (1891) but was not played in local high schools until the 1950s because most gyms up to that time were too small. After WWII several new gyms were built, notably in Merlin, Blenheim and Wallaceburg which permitted the playing of volleyball.

The first Kent County volleyball championship was won by the Wallaceburg senior boys’ team in 1955-56. For the next sixteen consecutive years the senior Tartans won the Kent County title.

The first OFSAA senior boys’ volleyball championship was held in 1956-57. It was not until 1974-75 that girls could participate at OFSAA. Coach Clare Maltby’s senior boys’ team (WDSS) of 1964-65 were the first Kent County school team to win an OFSAA gold medal in any sport.

The CKSS Golden Hawks have won fifteen (ten boys and five girls) OFSAA gold medals in volleyball, more than any other school in the province. The school in second place is West Elgin S.S. (with twelve) which was a member of KCSSAA from 1952 to 1967.

Individuals who played volleyball in the 1960s and 1970s might not recognize the game today.

Players can no longer block the serve. Serves may touch the net. Double hits on the first hit are not illegal. Scoring is by ‘rally point’ meaning one point is scored each rally. In the past a team had to be serving to score. Finally, in 1998, the libero was added. He/she is a player that wears a different coloured shirt who cannot serve, block or attack.

Coaches Jim Smyth and Randy Bartlett are the only local coaches to have led both a boys’ team and a girls’ team to OFSAA gold.

The above selections is an excerpt from local sports historian Larry Lahey’s book, ‘The History of Kent County High School Sports’, which is available at two locations in Chatham, Lenover Quality Meats on Park Ave. East, and the Instant Print Shoppe on Richmond Street.

rio2016
YOUR 99.1 CKXS RIO OLYMPIC REPORT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY VICTORY LINCOLN, 301 RICHMOND STREET IN CHATHAM

The Canadian medal count sits at 5 – 1 silver and 4 bronze, thanks to the latest podium visit from Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion, capturing bronze in sychro 10-metre platform diving. The duo also won bronze in 2012.

The Olympic rowing regatta was cancelled for Wednesday due to rain and high winds. Events are being rescheduled for the lagoon.

Toronto’s 16-year-old swimming sensation Penny Oleksiak is looking to add to her medal haul – already winning 2 in Rio – 1 silver, 1 bronze. Oleksiak and 22-year-old Chantal Van Landeghem of Winnipeg have both advanced to the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle. Those semis go shortly after 10 pm tonight. Van Landeghem was also member of the relay team alongside Oleksiak who won bronze in the 4×100 relay

Kelowna BC’s Kierra Smith has advanced to the semi finals of the 200m breaststroke, to be held shortly after 11 pm tonight. Smith is ranked 6th in the field of 16.

Tara Whitten of Edmonton finished 7th in cycling time trials of the 29.7 km race. Whitten finished with a time of 45 minutes, 1.16 seconds. American Kristin Armstrong won gold in the race, as the oldest competitor at the age of 42. Armstrong turns 43 tomorrow. She also won gold in 2008 in Beijing.

Whitby’s judo athlete Kelita Zupancic lost in extended time in the judo quarter finals to her Japanese opponent. However, Zupancic can still find the podium – if she beats Astria’s Bernadette Graf in a repechage contest – currently underway.

COMING UP :

Our Canadian women’s soccer team has been phenomenal to watch again at the Olympic Games. After a 2-1 win against Germany yesterday – one the ladies barely held on to, Canada will meet France in the quarter-finals Friday night at 6pm.

Another good day on the beach courts – this time for Canadian women Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan, who moved into first place in their pool after last night’s win over the Swiss. The Canadians can guarantee their spot in the quarter finals with a win over Germany tomorrow night.

After announcing their arrival to the world in a comeback win over Serbia in their opener, Canada’s women’s basketball team are back on the court this afternoon against Senegal – with a 4:45 tip-off.

The big story – again – has been US swimmer Michael Phelps, who continues to prove he’s a robot. Phelps did what Phelps does and won 2 Olympic gold medals in less than an hour last night, in the 200-metre butterfly and 4×200 freestyle with his American relay teammates. That’s 20 and 21 gold medals in his career and 25 medals total.

LOCAL NOTE: Corunna’s Derek Drouin, the current reigning world champion in high jump, will begin competition on Sunday, August 14th.
